The value of being present

Our Instagram reflection on 3 July 2025 focused on consistency, compassionate responses and the importance of adults who listen. This article develops those themes: the ordinary ways a caring relationship can take shape over time.

For a young person who has experienced disruption, trust may take time. A familiar adult who listens, explains what is happening and responds with care can offer a sense of predictability. Relationships are built through repeated experiences, not a single conversation.

Noticing what matters to the young person

A child’s interests, preferences and efforts deserve attention. Choosing to share an idea, joining an activity or asking for help may carry different meaning for different young people. Listening helps adults understand that meaning rather than assume it.

Recognising small steps is not about setting the same expectations for every child. It is about paying attention to the individual, their starting point and what they want to work towards, alongside the support set out in their care plan.

Care with a clear, steady approach

Polar’s three-bed EBD home, All Saints House, is supported by a small, stable team and a therapeutic model with CCATS input. Our approach brings together warm relationships, clear boundaries and an effort to understand behaviour as communication.

These are the principles behind the reflection. Every young person’s experience is individual, and a social post cannot capture the whole of their care or predict an outcome.
