Residential Care Worker

This is the entry-level role for many starting in residential care. Residential support workers provide day-to-day care and emotional support to children, helping them with daily tasks and managing their well-being.


• Duties:

• Assisting children with personal care, education, and social activities

• Providing emotional and behavioral support

• Helping develop life skills (cooking, budgeting, etc.)

• Implementing care plans

• Skills Required: Empathy, patience, communication skills, and resilience

• Qualifications: Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare (or equivalent)


Senior Residential Care Worker

This role involves taking on additional responsibilities, often leading a team during shifts and ensuring the smooth running of the home. Senior support workers oversee the care of children and provide guidance to staff.


• Duties:

• Managing daily routines and overseeing shifts

• Supporting and mentoring junior staff

• Handling emergencies or crisis situations

• Skills Required: Leadership, problem-solving, strong interpersonal skills

• Qualifications: Additional training or experience in child care; usually progression from a Residential Support Worker role

Deputy Manager

The Deputy Manager assists the Registered Manager in running the residential home, overseeing day-to-day operations, ensuring care standards are met, and managing staff.


• Duties:

• Assisting in the management of the care home

• Supervising and supporting staff

• Ensuring compliance with regulations and standards

• Skills Required: Leadership, team management, understanding of regulations

• Qualifications: Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People’s Services (or equivalent)

House Manager

The Registered Manager is responsible for the overall management of a children’s home. This role involves strategic planning, managing budgets, ensuring regulatory compliance, and overseeing the well-being of all residents.


• Duties:

• Managing all aspects of the home, from care to finances

• Ensuring that the home meets Ofsted (or equivalent) standards

• Supervising staff and ensuring their training and development

• Skills Required: Leadership, management, strong understanding of child care regulations

• Qualifications: Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and extensive experience in the field

Responsible Individual


For those interested in more senior management roles, a Regional or Area Manager oversees multiple residential homes. This role involves ensuring all homes meet high standards and managing budgets, policies, and staff across a region.


• Duties:

• Overseeing the performance of several residential homes

• Ensuring all homes comply with regulatory standards

• Managing budgets and resources across homes

• Skills Required: Strategic thinking, strong leadership, organizational management

• Qualifications: Extensive management experience and qualifications in leadership and social care
